Capex doubled to $44.9 billion in the second quarter, free cash flow came in at negative $5.9 billion, and management raised its 2026 capex guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion. Alphabet has stopped buying back stock and doubled its long-term debt in six months, and shares fell 7% after the report.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the spending is chasing demand that’s already signed. Google Cloud’s backlog reached $513.9 billion at the end of June. Management expects just over half of Alphabet’s backlog to turn into revenue within two years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And everyone is short of capacity. Google Cloud grew 82% while Alphabet was \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.tikr.com\u002Fblog\u002Fpichai-says-google-cloud-is-giving-up-revenue-to-feed-ai-research-heres-what-that-means-for-alphabet-stock\">giving up cloud revenue to feed its own AI research\u003C\u002Fa>. As the show’s host, Alex Kantrowitz, put it, that growth came “with a lot of the compute capacity going to AI research.” He said Sundar Pichai told him “everybody is short compute.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When supply is that tight, the cloud that builds the most capacity takes the share. Alphabet is paying up to be that cloud.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 id=\"h-the-first-test-lands-oct-28\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The first test lands Oct. 28\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My take: Google Cloud has a real shot at passing Azure in the next couple of years. At 24x forward earnings, investors are paying for the Alphabet of the past five years and giving Cloud almost no credit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alphabet reports after the close on Oct. 28, the same day as Microsoft, so the two growth rates will come out side by side. The number I’d watch is Google Cloud’s margin. This is its first quarter with rented outside capacity in it, and management has said that will weigh on margins in the near term.
