Without them, the dividend took 78% of free cash flow in 2024 and 77% in 2025.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year should be easier. Management guides to free cash flow of about $12.4 billion, against a dividend bill of about $9.1 billion. That’s a well-covered 73%. Free cash flow was already $6.9 billion in the first half. A single quarter can swing on one-off items, so the full-year guidance is the number to listen for on Tuesday.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PepsiCo has less room. It plans to pay $7.9 billion in dividends this year, close to all of its free cash flow over the last twelve months.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest risk to Coca-Cola’s cash isn’t in the quarter at all. An appeals court is weighing its tax case with the IRS. If Coca-Cola loses, it gives up the $6.0 billion deposit and faces about $14 billion more for 2010 through 2025, by management’s estimate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 id=\"h-volume-moves-the-stock\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volume moves the stock\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Margins and cash make the case for the dividend, but the stock usually trades on organic revenue growth and how it splits between volume and price.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unit case volume grew 3% in the first quarter and 5% in the second, after a flat 2025. The World Cup and easy comparisons helped. On a two-year basis, second-quarter volume grew 2%.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday’s report covers the first quarter without the World Cup, against 1% volume growth a year earlier. Management’s long-term model calls for 2% to 3% growth a year from volume and 2% to 3% from price. For this year, it guides to organic revenue growth of about 5%.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 id=\"h-the-safer-dividend-comes-at-a-full-price\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The safer dividend comes at a full price\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coca-Cola keeps the “stronger” label on Tuesday if it shows three things:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>an operating margin above last year’s third quarter\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>full-year EPS guidance at or above the top of 9% to 10%\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>free cash flow guidance still at about $12.4 billion\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volume growth near 3% without the World Cup would help the stock’s case too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My take: for a retiree, Coca-Cola’s smaller check has the bigger cushion behind it, and that’s worth the lower yield. The stock is a harder call at 25x forward earnings, when simply holding guidance leaves the company behind its analysts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, one quarter won’t settle it.
